The role
Transmits accurately and literally between Spanish and English to facilitate communication in healthcare encounters.
Clarifies non-literal translations and provides essential cultural framing to prevent misunderstandings.
Explains the interpreter role to patients, families, and healthcare providers to ensure smooth collaboration.
Supports culturally competent care by offering cultural insights and context relevant to care delivery.
Maintains confidentiality and ethical conduct, documents services thoroughly, and coordinates with external agencies as needed.
Requires accredited medical interpreter training and national certification (CHI/CMI or equivalent) within 12 months of hire; two years of college preferred; ongoing professional development.
