The role
The Conflict Operations Editor at The New York Times is responsible for leading and managing newsgathering in conflict zones, ensuring the safety of journalists and operational efficiency. They collaborate with security teams and senior editors, guiding reporting efforts in challenging environments and deploying quickly to establish or scale bureaus. The role involves providing situation updates, analysing security incidents, and developing safety protocols, in addition to leading disaster recovery and crisis management. Coordination with legal and operational teams, along with support for freelancers and evacuees, is integral. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in conflict journalism, crisis management skills, and a strong grasp of operational security principles. They will demonstrate leadership, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to journalistic independence.
